Quality Engineer (SQA – Supplier Quality Assurance)

Job title: Quality Engineer (SQA – Supplier Quality Assurance)
Reporting to: Quality Manager
Objective: Using own quality engineering skills, and through close team working with members of other Departments, to assure the quality of Alcon’s product output on a timely basis, to ensure that Alcon meets its customers’ requirements, and enhances its profitability.
Focus on supplier development, IATF16949 compliance and concern management.

Key Responsibilities: 

• To work closely with Sales, Engineering, Projects (NPI’s) and Purchasing functions to understand customer and product requirements, using Quality Tools and resources to validate new or improved processes, seeking continuous improvement as well as waste elimination.
• To use APQP and PPAP process for new and existing projects on externally sourced components and subcontracted processes, as required by customer.
• To liaise with suppliers to ensure product manufactured and subcontracted processes meet engineering specifications, comply with customer-specific requirements (CSR’s) and drive the resolution of quality issues using appropriate problem-solving methodology.
• If inspection activity identifies a non-conformance, take rapid steps to initiate containment action internally and with supplier, followed up by problem-solving activity to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Perform supplier visits and audits. Maintain relevant supplier records within Alcon quality system.
• To drive supplier development activities. Use knowledge, skills, and techniques to enhance overall supplier performance in line with business requirements.
• Compile Quality report on findings and track 3rd party inspection costs related to supplier issues.
• Follow the supplier returns process for non-conforming components.
• To carry out internal system and process audits related to Quality & Environmental Management systems (IATF16949, ISO9001, ISO14001).

Key Competencies

• Formal education / Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering or related area.
• 5 Years’ experience in Engineering, Mechanical, or Metallurgic tier 1 industry.
• Experience in metrology (reading technical drawings and interpreting geometric features/tolerances) within a precision engineering environment.
• Experience in manual inspection using conventional measurement equipment.
• Experience in supplier development, auditing, concern management.
• Fully conversant with Quality tools such as Control Plans, ISIR, 8D reporting, QOS KPI’s.
• Knowledge and experience to apply the 5 Quality Core Tools:
– Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP)
– Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)
– Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)
– Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA)
– Statistical Process Control (SPC)

• Knowledge about IMDS (International Material Data System)
• IATF16949 Certified Internal Quality Auditor (certified 2nd party lead auditor preferable).
• Understanding about customer-specific requirements (CSR’s).
• Computer literate, comfortable using ERP software and MS Office daily.
• Able to prepare and deliver presentations.
• Ability to communicate and report effectively at all levels of the organisation.
• High level of discipline and organisation.
