Production Engineering Manager

Reporting To: Operations Director

Role Purpose: Lead, enable and drive the Production Engineering team to deliver well engineered products through excellence in process, working with Design to ensure DFM and stable repetitive manufacturing of parts.

Leadership and Team Management

Responsible for leading a team of engineers and technicians. This includes hiring, training, and mentoring staff, as well as fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. Experience and clear understanding of TQM, with a desire to attain and sustain such a culture.

The team’s areas of responsibility are in our CNC machine shop, various assembly lines and any associated in-house process, across 4 buildings. Their tasks include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide estimation of process time for quotations.
  • CNC programmes, jigs, fixtures, including proving out new jobs.
  • Ensure routings are correct in Alcon’s ERP program.
  • Ownership of process, via process layout and execution and continuous improvement.

Manufacturing Process Management

Develop and optimize manufacturing processes for all our value streams, understanding the different requirements between them. This also means being able to identify and implement new manufacturing technologies, streamlining production lines, and ensuring efficient workflow, with a justified ROI investment.

Quality Assurance

Establish and maintain quality standards as required by Alcon and its clients. This involves working closely with the Quality team to ensure that products meet both internal and OEM standards. Knowledge of relevant ISO standards, such as ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001 and ISO/TS16949, is crucial for compliance and efficiency.

Project Management

Lead key projects related to the development and introduction of new products, plant and processes. Manage timelines, resources, and budgets to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within cost parameters.

Supplier Collaboration

Collaborate with equipment suppliers to ensure the timely delivery, commissioning and acceptance of production equipment. This may involve negotiating contracts, overseeing supply chain logistics, and managing supplier relationships.

Innovation and Technology Adoption

Stay abreast of the latest trends and technologies in relevant manufacturing processes. Implement innovative solutions and technologies to improve production efficiency and product quality, including automation in line with company direction and agreed budgets.

Budget Management

Be responsible for managing the budget of the Production Engineering department, including cost analysis and financial planning. This includes responsibility for capacity planning and the associated capex budget.

Compliance and Safety

Be a champion for H&S and be responsible for safety of self and others. Ensure all process documentation and procedures are up to date and accurate.

Cross-Functional Coordination

Work closely with other departments, such as Sales, Design, Production and Planning to ensure the production engineering strategy aligns with broader company objectives. Use expertise in FMEA, APQP and PPAP to ensure projects are delivered to client requirements with an acceptable and appropriately mitigated level of risk.

Continuous Improvement

Promote a culture of continuous improvement within the team, encouraging innovation and efficiency in all aspects of production engineering. This also includes Lean and other working practices associated with a world class manufacturer.

Reporting and Analytics

Regularly report on production engineering metrics, project progress, and other key performance indicators to senior management to demonstrate a high performing, agile, responsive team.

This role typically requires an engineering degree, preferably in production, manufacturing, mechanical or automotive engineering, and substantial experience in automotive manufacturing, particularly in an OEM environment. Strong leadership, communication, technical expertise, and project management skills are essential. Knowledge of industry-specific regulations and standards is also important. A thorough understanding of Lean, Industry 4.0 and IIOT is required.
