Production Engineer – Machining

Reporting to: Manufacturing Operations Manager

Objective: To provide day-to-day production engineering support to the Alcon production system to deliver the finished product to the required Quality, Cost & Delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Manufacturing Operations Manager in delivering smooth & effective support to the manufacturing business.
  • Promotes a “Visual Management” method of communication with the Team and others.
  • Deals with constraints or secures support/assistance of the Manu. & Prod. Engineer Manager.
  • Ensures processes tools and technique are developed to “best practice” working with production.
  • Creating production CNC programs & proving out.
  • Identify ways to reduce costs.
  • Work closely and be proactive with Design Engineers in order to optimise designs for machining (DFM).
  • Analysis of and solutions to problems relating to the machining process (eg, identifying weaknesses in these processes and initiating the appropriate actions).
  • Collecting data and investigating non-conformances to initiate corrective actions to achieve the division’s quality targets.
  • Give support to manufacturing engineering activities for identifying long term manufacturing strategies.
  • Generating process documentation and maintaining it (PFMEA, Control Plans, Flow Charts & Process docs e.g., Layout etc).
  • Specifying designs for fixtures & tooling for in house or subcontract manufacture.
  • Train and organise production staff during process hand over to production.
  • Support project meetings in order to convey and ensure the adherence of DFM as applies to the manufacturing facility.
  • Understands, fully complies and supports the Quality, Health Safety & Environmental Management Systems (IATF 16949, ISO 9001 & ISO 14001).
  • Ensures Environmental Health & Safety policy is adhered to all times.

The Candidate

  • Ideally qualified with a minimum of 5 years post graduate Manufacturing/production Engineering experience.
  • Work experience has ideally been gained in a Tier 1 automotive environment.
  • Have a background in jig & fixture design, including build & prove out.
  • Ability to produce CNC programs using CAD/CAM systems and then prove them off including initial inspection of the manufactured components.
  • Experience of CNC machining of complex surfaces on VMC’s, HMC’s and 5 Axis.
  • Knowledge of Fanuc and Heidenhain controlled machines is a requirement.
  • Experience of working with CAD & CAM packages. Ideally Solidworks & HyperMILL.
  • A working knowledge and experience of APQP systems is a requirement.
  • A working knowledge and experience of completing capability studies is a requirement.
  • A working knowledge and experience of Measurement System Analysis would be beneficial.
